Nigeria, with a population exceeding 160 million, stands as Africa’s most populous nation and its second-largest economy, wielding significant influence across the continent.
However, the country has grappled with persistent political instability, systemic corruption, and the mismanagement of public resources, compounded in recent years by escalating religious and ethnic tensions. Consequently, over half of Nigeria’s population continues to live below the poverty line.
While Nigeria has achieved four peaceful transitions of power since the restoration of civilian rule in 1999, its political landscape remains dominated by patronage networks, weak opposition, low electoral participation, and voting patterns deeply divided along ethnic and religious lines.
Much of the nation’s wealth is concentrated on a small economic and political elite, leaving many citizens disempowered and unable to challenge the status quo, advocate for their rights, or demand accountability from those in power.
