Job Summary

The Legal and Compliance Officer is responsible for upholding the firm’s legal, regulatory, and compliance frameworks by ensuring full conformity with applicable laws, regulations, and professional standards. This position entails delivering expert legal and compliance counsel, meticulously reviewing contracts and legal documents, facilitating corporate governance operations, overseeing statutory filings and record-keeping, performing compliance assessments, and contributing to risk management strategies.

Job Details

Collaborate in the creation and execution of a robust compliance framework, designed to ensure adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.

Assist in the preparation, evaluation, and negotiation of contracts, reports, internal governance policies, and other legal documents essential to the Firm’s operations.

Conduct internal evaluations to ensure adherence to risk management protocols and independence compliance standards as mandated by global regulations.

Offer expert legal counsel to leadership and internal stakeholders to uphold adherence with the Firm’s Standard Terms and Conditions.

Engage proactively with regulatory authorities to maintain full adherence to all statutory obligations, licenses, and permits relevant to the Firm’s operational scope.

Aid in the coordination of Board meetings by drafting notices, assembling meeting agendas, compiling materials for board packs, and documenting meeting minutes.

Maintain statutory records, including registers of members and directors, as well as meeting minutes, and ensure the accurate and timely filing of all relevant documents with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

Provide support in overseeing legal disputes, claims, and contractual matters by proposing well-reasoned and feasible solutions.

Engage in the development and delivery of internal compliance training initiatives for staff members.

Offer comprehensive assistance to the General Counsel and External Legal Counsel in overseeing the Firm’s legal matters and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and corporate governance standards.

Handle additional responsibilities as they arise from time to time as needed.

Ensures the successful candidate possesses a bachelor’s degree in a related field, along with at least three years of relevant professional experience. Demonstrated expertise in project management methodologies, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in industry-standard software tools are essential. Exceptional communication abilities, both written and verbal, are required to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams. The role demands meticulous attention to detail, the capacity to manage multiple priorities, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Familiarity with compliance regulations and risk management principles is highly advantageous.

A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree and admission to the Nigerian Bar (B. L) are required.

Minimum of five to six years of hands-on experience in legal and compliance roles following call completion is required.

Experience acquired within a professional services firm or an international corporation will further strengthen your application.

Proficient in corporate, commercial, and company law, as well as data privacy regulations, ICAN regulations, and the IFA Code of Ethics for Accountants, among other legal frameworks.

Demonstrates exceptional proficiency in analytical thinking, conducting thorough research, and resolving complex problems effectively.

Demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and exceptional organizational capabilities.

Effective articulation in both spoken and written formats is essential.

Proven ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and build strong working relationships.

Strong organizational skills are essential, along with the capacity to manage time efficiently and prioritize tasks with precision.

Proficient in delivering compelling presentations and adept at utilizing Microsoft Office suites to enhance productivity and communication.
