About Medecins Sans Frontieres

Médecins sans frontières (MSF) is an independent, international medical humanitarian organization providing urgent assistance to individuals impacted by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters, and healthcare exclusion. MSF delivers aid based on need, without discrimination regarding race, religion, gender, or political beliefs.

Our work is guided by medical ethics, neutrality, and impartiality.

A global network

Established in Paris, France, in 1971, MSF operates under the principles outlined in its founding charter. As a non-profit, self-governing organization, MSF functions as a global network of 24 associations, collectively known as MSF International, headquartered in Switzerland.

Thousands of medical professionals, logistical experts, and administrative staff—primarily recruited locally—implement programs across approximately 70 countries worldwide.

Humanitarian commitment

MSF’s mission is rooted in humanitarian values, delivering high-quality medical care to those in crisis, irrespective of background. Operating independently, MSF assesses needs directly through on-the-ground evaluations. Over 90% of funding is sourced from private donations, rather than governmental contributions.

MSF maintains strict neutrality, refusing to take sides in conflicts while ensuring care is provided solely on the basis of medical need. We advocate for unimpeded access to victims in line with international humanitarian law.

Advocacy and accountability

MSF teams frequently witness human rights abuses and neglect in underserved regions. In response, the organization may publicly denounce crises that receive little attention, expose hidden abuses, criticize systemic aid failures, or challenge the misuse of humanitarian aid for political gain.

Delivering excellence in care

MSF rejects the notion that marginalized populations deserve substandard treatment, striving instead to offer high-caliber medical care. In 1999, upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, MSF dedicated the award funds to raising awareness and combating neglected diseases.

Through the Access Campaign and collaborations with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, MSF has played a pivotal role in reducing HIV/AIDS treatment costs and advancing research into treatments for malaria and neglected diseases such as sleeping sickness and visceral leishmaniasis.
