"Nigeria: Africa's fastest-growing economy by 2050."
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and the world’s seventh-largest by population, exceeds 175 million people and continues to expand rapidly in urbanization and modernization. Projections indicate that, at its current trajectory, Nigeria will become the world’s third-most populous country by 2050, with an estimated population of around 450 million. However, the country also ranks second globally in the number of people living with HIV, with approximately 3.3 million individuals affected.
Currently, 45% of Nigeria’s population is under 18 years old, a demographic reality with profound implications for future population growth. Within the next decade, nearly half of the population is expected to enter reproductive age. Approximately 45 million Nigerian women are of childbearing age, yet maternal mortality remains alarmingly high at 630 deaths per 100,000 live births, alongside a neonatal mortality rate of 39 deaths per 1,000 live births.
Additionally, 20% of Nigerian women report an unmet need for family planning, while the total fertility rate stands at 5.7 children per woman. The contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) in Nigeria is currently 17.5%, though the Minister of Health has set an ambitious national target of achieving a 36% CPR by 2018.
DKT Nigeria is committed to supporting this national objective by offering a diverse range of contraceptive solutions—including condoms, intrauterine devices (IUD’s), oral contraceptives, emergency contraceptives, injectables, and implants—through innovative marketing strategies. The organization also prioritizes adolescents by delivering youth-friendly reproductive health services, leveraging culturally relevant branding and modern advertising channels, such as social media, to engage diverse audiences across Nigeria.
Through its efforts, DKT Nigeria aims to advance the country’s female reproductive health objectives by providing safe, affordable, and high-quality contraceptive products. The initiative seeks to dispel misconceptions about birth control, raise HIV prevention awareness, and address transmission risks. By expanding contraceptive options and improving accessibility through strategic marketing and widespread distribution, DKT Nigeria fosters informed choices and open dialogue about family planning, sexual health, and contraception.
Employing a social marketing approach, DKT Nigeria collaborates with both private and public sectors to reach urban and rural communities, promoting education and re-education on family planning. In 2014, the organization achieved significant milestones, including the sale of over 16 million condoms, more than 60,000 IUD’s, and the introduction of Dayana Press injectable contraceptives—with 18,900 units sold—resulting in 871,927 couple-years of protection.
