Job Summary:
We seek a proactive and seasoned Legal Officer to deliver comprehensive legal guidance, administer contract management, uphold regulatory compliance, supervise litigation processes, and enforce corporate governance protocols. The preferred applicant will demonstrate deep expertise in commercial law, exceptional proficiency in drafting contracts, and a proven track record within the financial services industry.
Oversee and execute critical duties including strategic planning, operational management, and team leadership to ensure organizational goals are met. Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to enhance efficiency, productivity, and compliance with industry standards. Monitor performance metrics, analyze data trends, and provide actionable insights to drive continuous improvement across departments. Foster collaboration with cross-functional teams to align resources and optimize workflows. Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, mitigate risks, and uphold the highest standards of corporate governance. Lead initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction, brand reputation, and stakeholder relations through targeted programs and initiatives.
Deliver expert legal counsel and assistance to various business units concerning an extensive array of legal and regulatory issues.
Draft, prepare, and finalize a variety of legal documents—such as loan agreements, deed assignments, demand letters, contracts, legal opinions, and memoranda—while ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable laws. Additionally, engage in thorough review processes to identify potential risks or discrepancies and collaborate with stakeholders to negotiate terms that align with organizational objectives and regulatory standards.
Oversee contract administration responsibilities while ensuring the meticulous organization and upkeep of a comprehensive database containing legal documents and agreements.
Coordinate litigation matters and oversee their progress while serving as the primary liaison with external counsel, ensuring meticulous maintenance of all litigation records.
Facilitate dispute resolution mechanisms and collaborate in addressing customer complaints that involve legal considerations.
Maintain adherence to all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards to ensure full compliance.
Facilitate corporate governance initiatives by managing essential documentation such as board materials, meeting minutes, and statutory filings.
Perform comprehensive legal research and deliver analytical perspectives to facilitate informed business decision-making.
Track regulatory changes and provide strategic advice to leadership regarding new legal and compliance obligations.
Our team is responsible for delivering legal awareness training sessions and compliance workshops to employees.
Participate in pertinent meetings and compile legal reports and documentation as necessary.
Handle various legal and administrative tasks as designated by senior leadership.
Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field, with at least 2 years in a leadership role. Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline is required; advanced degrees are preferred. Demonstrated expertise in project management, strategic planning, and cross-functional team collaboration is essential. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are a must, along with excellent communication abilities. Familiarity with industry-specific software and tools is necessary. Must be able to work in fast-paced environments while meeting tight deadlines. Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends is highly valued.
A recognized institution must confer a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree.
Must hold membership in the Nigerian Bar Association and maintain an active practicing license.
A minimum of six years of post-qualification experience in a commercial law firm or a corporate legal department is required.
Professional experience in financial services, fintech, lending, microfinance, or banking industries is strongly preferred.
Proficient in commercial law, contract administration, litigation procedures, regulatory adherence, and corporate governance frameworks is essential.
Proficiency in consumer lending or credit operations is highly beneficial.
Proficient in legal drafting, negotiation, analytical reasoning, and communication, with a strong command of all required skills.
The role demands meticulous attention to detail, a high level of professionalism, and the ability to exercise sound judgment in all situations.
