"NRC: Protecting and promoting rights for displaced people globally."
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-profit, humanitarian, non-governmental organization operating independently. It delivers assistance, protection, and sustainable solutions to refugees and internally displaced persons globally.
What is NRC?
NRC advocates for and safeguards the rights of refugees and individuals forcibly displaced within their own countries. It intervenes in contexts of armed conflict and other situations where its expertise can make a meaningful impact.
With approximately 5,000 staff members, the majority of whom are national employees, NRC operates projects in around 25 countries worldwide. All initiatives are overseen by the NRC Head Office in Oslo.
Founded in 1946 as Aid to Europe, NRC initially provided support to refugees in Europe following World War II. Today, it functions as an independent private foundation and collaborates closely with the UN and other humanitarian organizations both internationally and in Norway.
What does NRC do?
Program Activities:
NRC’s primary focus is delivering humanitarian aid through field-based program activities. It specializes in five core areas—shelter, food security, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), education, and information, counseling, and legal assistance (UCLA)—which are adaptable to diverse contexts and mutually reinforcing.
