"Nigerian Breweries: Pioneering Nigeria’s brewing excellence since 1946."
Nigerian Breweries Plc stands as Nigeria’s pioneering and leading brewing enterprise, established in 1946. A defining moment in its history occurred in June 1949, when the inaugural bottle of STAR lager beer rolled off the production line at its Lagos Brewery, marking the beginning of commercial brewing in the country. Over the years, the Lagos facility has undergone multiple upgrades, evolving into the nation’s most advanced brewing hub.
The company expanded its operations with the commissioning of a second brewery in Aba in 1957, followed by Kaduna Brewery in 1963 and Ibadan Brewery in 1982. In 1993, Nigerian Breweries further strengthened its footprint by acquiring a fifth brewery in Enugu. A sixth facility, AMA Brewery in Am eke, Enugu State, was inaugurated in October 2003 and has since grown to become Nigeria’s largest and most technologically sophisticated brewery.
While the Old Enugu Brewery ceased operations in 2004, the company bolstered its production capabilities by acquiring an additional malting plant in Aba in 2008.
In October 2011, Nigerian Breweries acquired majority equity stakes in Son Systems Associates Business Management Limited and Life Breweries Limited from Heineken N.V., following Heineken’s earlier takeover of five Nigerian breweries from the Son Group in January 2011. The integration of Son Systems’ breweries in OTA and Kaduna, along with Life Breweries in Anisha, brought three renowned brands—Goldberg lager, Malta Gold, and Life Continental lager—into the Nigerian Breweries portfolio.
From its modest origins in 1946, Nigerian Breweries has grown into a powerhouse with eight active breweries nationwide, ensuring the distribution of its premium-quality beverages across all regions of Nigeria. This expansion is complemented by state-of-the-art malting facilities in Aba and Kaduna.
