About International Organization for Migration - IOM

Founded in 1951, IOM stands as the preeminent intergovernmental organization specializing in migration, collaborating closely with governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental partners.

With 151 Member States, an additional 12 observer States, and a presence in over 100 countries, IOM is committed to advancing humane and orderly migration for the collective benefit. It fulfills this mission by delivering services and counsel to governments and migrants alike.

IOM’s efforts aim to ensure the orderly and dignified management of migration, foster international cooperation on migration-related matters, develop practical solutions to migration challenges, and extend humanitarian assistance to migrants in need—including refugees and internally displaced persons.

The IOM Constitution underscores the intrinsic connection between migration and economic, social, and cultural progress, as well as the fundamental right to freedom of movement.

IOM operates across four core pillars of migration management:

– Migration and Development
– Facilitating Migration
– Regulating Migration
– Forced Migration

Additionally, IOM’s cross-cutting initiatives encompass the advancement of international migration law, policy dialogue and guidance, protection of migrants’ rights, migration health, and the integration of gender perspectives in migration.

IOM Nigeria began its operations in 2001, prioritizing interventions such as counter-trafficking efforts, migration governance, the return and reintegration of stranded migrants—particularly to Liberia—and the facilitation of voluntary returns from abroad.
