About ICRC - International Committee of the Red Cross

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement stands as the world’s largest humanitarian network, committed to relieving suffering, safeguarding life and health, and upholding human dignity—particularly in times of armed conflict and emergencies. Operating across every nation, it is sustained by millions of dedicated volunteers.

This Movement is focused on mitigating and preventing human suffering in crises such as wars, epidemics, floods, and earthquakes. It is not a single entity but a collective of three distinct components: the International Committee of the Red Cross (CRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and 189 independent National Societies. While each operates with its own legal framework and responsibilities, they are unified by seven Core Principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. All members uphold these principles as a fundamental commitment.

The CRC’s sole humanitarian purpose is to shield the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and violence, delivering essential support. It also leads and coordinates the Movement’s international relief efforts during conflicts. Founded in 1863, it serves as the origin of the Movement.

The Federation empowers and guides National Societies in delivering humanitarian aid to those most in need. It organizes and aligns their efforts to assist victims of disasters, refugees, and those impacted by health crises. Established in 1919, it plays a pivotal role in expanding the Movement’s reach and impact.
