Trying is in search of an exceptional, results-driven executive to assume full accountability for our business development initiatives and day-to-day operations. This pivotal position demands an uncommon blend of strategic growth leadership and meticulous operational management.

As the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Business Development, your primary focus will involve driving rapid market expansion for Trying by securing new clients, crafting compelling high-value proposals, and finalizing agreements—all while overseeing internal teams, refining corporate frameworks, and maintaining flawless daily operational performance.

You will manage the day-to-day operations of the business, enabling executive leadership to dedicate their attention to long-term vision and strategic planning.

Oversee and execute a range of critical duties to ensure operational excellence and team productivity. Develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with organizational goals while fostering a collaborative work environment. Lead cross-functional projects, ensuring seamless coordination and adherence to deadlines. Monitor performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and drive data-driven decision-making. Act as a mentor to team members, providing guidance and support to enhance professional growth. Maintain compliance with industry regulations and company policies to uphold standards of quality and integrity. Manage resources efficiently to optimize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Business Development & Revenue Growth (50%): Drive strategic initiatives to expand market reach and enhance profitability by identifying new revenue streams, fostering client relationships, and optimizing sales pipelines. Focus on long-term growth through market analysis, partnership development, and innovative approaches to maximize revenue potential while aligning with organizational objectives.

Pipeline Generation: Spearhead a comprehensive market research initiative focused on identifying, targeting, and acquiring new corporate, institutional, and public sector clients to expand the client base.

Proposal & Bidding Management: You will take full ownership of developing, organizing, and delivering sophisticated technical business proposals, expressions of interest (Lois), and competitive tender submissions.

As the primary executive representative of Trying, you will engage with new prospects, deliver compelling presentations of our services, negotiate high-value agreements, and oversee the seamless onboarding of clients to ensure a strong foundation for long-term partnerships.

Market Strategy: Evaluate regional market dynamics to strategically position Trying’s service offerings in a competitive manner.

Operational leadership and internal management responsibilities constitute 40% of the role, encompassing the oversight of daily processes and the coordination of team efforts to ensure efficient workflow. This involves establishing and maintaining operational policies, optimizing resource allocation, and monitoring performance metrics to drive productivity. Additionally, the position requires the development and implementation of internal frameworks that enhance collaboration, communication, and accountability across departments. Strong leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and a results-driven mindset are essential to meet strategic objectives and foster a high-performing operational environment.

Oversee all daily administrative and operational functions of the firm to maintain efficiency and ensure alignment with corporate objectives.

Provide strategic guidance, support, and performance assessments for internal staff and project teams. Develop and implement measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive excellence and cultivate an environment of high achievement.

Continually evaluate and optimize Trying’s internal workflows, reporting structures, and operational policies to enhance productivity and scalability.

Resource management involves overseeing project schedules, operational logistics, and the strategic allocation of resources to guarantee timely and budget-compliant delivery of client commitments.

The Strategy & Reporting function represents 10% of the role’s responsibilities, focusing on analyzing performance metrics, identifying trends, and supporting data-driven decision-making processes. This involves compiling and interpreting complex datasets, preparing comprehensive reports, and delivering actionable insights to senior leadership. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, proficiency in data visualization tools, and experience in strategic planning or business intelligence. Key duties include monitoring KPIs, creating executive-level presentations, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align reporting frameworks with organizational objectives.

Executive Alignment: Work in close partnership with the Managing Director to develop and implement actionable operational and sales objectives that align with the company’s long-term strategic vision.

Prepare detailed weekly and monthly reports highlighting business development pipelines, financial status, and operational progress to ensure clear and actionable insights for stakeholders.

To achieve success, specific performance indicators (KPIs) must be established and met, ensuring measurable progress and accountability in key areas of responsibility.

Your responsibilities include driving revenue growth by acquiring new client contracts, focusing on both the volume and value of these agreements to enhance overall business performance.

Proposal Win-Rate measures the efficiency and success percentage of corporate proposals that have been submitted.

Operational Efficiency: Enhancing internal project delivery speed and optimizing resource allocation.

A key responsibility involves enhancing the overall performance index and retention rates of internal team members.

The ideal candidate must meet specific qualifications and possess a defined professional profile. Essential requirements include a relevant degree, specialized certifications, or equivalent experience in the field. Demonstrated expertise in key competencies, such as technical skills or industry knowledge, is mandatory. Additionally, the role demands strong analytical abilities, effective communication skills, and proficiency in relevant software or tools. Prior experience in a similar position or industry is highly preferred, along with a proven track record of meeting performance objectives. The candidate should exhibit adaptability, problem-solving capabilities, and a commitment to continuous professional development.

Professional candidates should possess 8–10 years of cumulative work experience, including a minimum of 3–5 years in a senior leadership role such as COO, Business Development Director, General Manager, or Senior Consultant.

Education requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in fields such as Business Administration, International Relations, Management, or a closely related discipline, with a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) or another relevant graduate qualification strongly preferred.

Experienced in delivering measurable results within B2B corporate sales environments, adept at crafting compelling commercial proposals, and skilled in managing intricate procurement procedures.

Operational Acumen: Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams, optimizing internal workflows, and fostering a culture of operational efficiency.

Abuja business ecosystem proficiency is required, encompassing corporate, government, and development-sector networks.

Exceptional proficiency in negotiation, outstanding written and verbal communication abilities, strategic acumen, and decisive leadership capabilities define this role’s core competencies.
