Job Purpose

The Inclusive Food Systems Project (IFSP) Communications and Knowledge Management Consultant will support the Food and Agriculture unit in line with ActionAid Nigeria’s (AAN’s) and IFSP’s Communication Strategy, leading on content development, visual and multimedia production, public affairs, media relations, and knowledge management to inform and influence AAN’s stakeholders, staff, and donors across the organisation’s thematic areas.

S/he will liaise closely with the Communications Coordinator to support the project’s publications, branded content, and press relations, while contributing to the broader advocacy, digital communications, and knowledge management priorities of AAN.

S/he will also be responsible for assigned institutional communications duties, including supporting and executing the project’s and organisation’s communications strategy, generating and managing project knowledge products, contributing to capacity building and partnership engagement, and supporting the management of AAN’s prioritised social media channels.

Specific Responsibilities

Communications and Content Development:

Develop and implement innovative and effective communication and media strategies for the unit.

Facilitate and ensure timely delivery of communications support to the Food and Agriculture unit, in line with agreed timelines.

Conceptualise, create, and produce clear, creative, and brand-consistent visual and multimedia materials, including campaign materials for international observance days and other thematic events, across digital, print, and motion formats for web and offline use.

Develop and oversee engaging content for digital platforms, including social media, websites, email campaigns, and multimedia stories, to promote AAN’s brand and the work of the Food and Agriculture unit.

Travel to project locations as required to gather content, conduct interviews, and document field activities and community engagements.

Write and develop human interest stories from field activities and community engagements for donor reporting, project visibility and newsletter publication.

Media Relations:

Organise and coordinate press conferences, media briefings, and press engagements for the Food and Agriculture unit, including logistics, invitations, and press kits.

Draft and disseminate media advisories, press releases, and statements related to the unit’s work and thematic priorities.

Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media houses to secure consistent and accurate coverage of the unit’s activities.

Monitor and document media coverage of the unit’s work, and compile media reports for internal review.

Knowledge Management:

Design and implement knowledge management systems and processes to capture, document, and disseminate project learning, best practices, and case studies across the Food and Agriculture unit.

Generate regular knowledge products, including case studies, lessons-learned briefs, and success stories, drawing on project data, field documentation, and M&E findings, for internal learning, donor reporting, and external visibility.

Support the Food and Agriculture unit in tracking and documenting project performance and impact, ensuring communications and knowledge products are aligned with M&E data and donor and organisational compliance requirements.

Maintain an organised, accessible repository of project documentation, publications, and visibility materials for ease of internal reference and institutional memory.

Institutional Communications and Capacity Support:

Responsible for quality assurance of documentation and publishing of the unit’s and other AAN manuals and publications.

Support capacity building for project partners and AAN staff on documentation, communication, and knowledge management of AAN’s thematic areas.

Perform any other assigned responsibilities as it relates to the Communications hub and implementation of AAN Communications Strategy.

Key Working Relationships:

Internal: Entire AAN staff

External: Smallholder Women Farmers, Young Farmers Associations, The Media, Relevant Government Agencies, Donors, Partners, and other stakeholders

Persons Specifications

Education / Qualifications:

First Degree in, Fine Art (Specialising in graphics design) Mass Communication, Theatre Art (with specialisation in media art) or any relevant field.

Membership of NUJ, APCON and other relevant professional bodies is desirable

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years work experience, 2 of which should be in media and communications and/or in the development sector.

Website development and digital communications experience.

Capacity building experience, including training and facilitating.

Knowledge of the agricultural sector is desirable.

Experience working with the media is desirable.

Familiarity with M&E frameworks and reporting is desirable

Familiarity with the media sector and previous relationships with same is desirable.

Skill / Abilities:

Content production / Photography skills

Skilled in handling DSLR camera for photography and video documentation

Experience with M&E reporting tools

Strong communication and writing skills

Online i.e. website management and digital communications

Ability to provide practical solutions within set deadlines.

Good computer skills, especially in the use of publishing tools

Multi-tasking skills

Proficiency in the basic use of either Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, & Photoshop, Canva, and/or other common design and layout applications

Ability to work under pressure

Ability to work within ActionAid branding guideline
