About American University of Nigeria (AUN)

The institution was established as Africa’s inaugural Development University, dedicated to pioneering service learning and cultivating visionary leaders equipped to address pressing societal challenges. Situated in Yoga, Adamant State, this world-class, career-focused university serves as a transformative force in advancing regional development. AUN is steadfast in equipping students with the essential skills and leadership qualities required to resolve Africa’s most pressing social and economic issues.

AUN delivers an American-style education, aligning its curriculum, teaching methodologies, and student assessment with those of top universities in the United States. In September 2005, the university welcomed its inaugural class of 124 students and 20 professors, initially operating from temporary facilities at the AUN Academy, located directly across from the permanent campus. Within seven years, AUN has emerged as a leading educational model, inspiring other institutions across Nigeria and West Africa.

Enrollment at AUN empowers students to achieve both personal fulfillment and professional success. As Nigeria’s first fully wireless university, AUN places a strong emphasis on information technology, integrating computers, internet connectivity, and other critical digital resources into teaching and learning. With a commitment to small class sizes, the university aims to graduate highly educated and competent students across a broad spectrum of general and specialized fields. By providing world-class American education in Nigeria, AUN prepares students to thrive as entrepreneurs, corporate professionals, government leaders, scientists, and responsible citizens—either within the country or across Africa. The university offers a comprehensive academic continuum, spanning elementary, secondary, undergraduate, and graduate levels.

Adjacent to the main campus, the AUN Academy operates an elementary school, a Charter School, and a high school, all offering American and international curricula. Since 2009, AUN has successfully graduated four cohorts, with many alumni advancing to prestigious graduate programs abroad, securing positions in key organizations, or launching successful enterprises both locally and internationally. AUN attracts a diverse student body from around the world, including the UK, USA, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, and Rwanda, with the largest international cohort hailing from Rwanda, where 17 students enrolled for the fall 2012 semester.

AUN’s innovative educational approach and dedication to community service have earned widespread recognition from global organizations. In 2011, the American Peace Corps honored the AUN Founder with the inaugural Harry Wofford Global Citizenship Award during its 50th-anniversary celebration, recognizing his extraordinary generosity and commitment to higher education. Additionally, AUN’s President, Dr. Marge Ensign, received the African Leadership Award in Educational Excellence in the UK the same year. In October 2012, AUN was further distinguished with the prestigious Africa Leading University Award, presented in Atlanta, Georgia.
