Office: Located within the GDNL Terminal ‘E’ Admin Building on the first floor of the Papa Port Complex, Papa Wharf, Lagos-Nigeria.

To achieve operational excellence, this position is responsible for facilitating the efficient, secure, and precise physical discharge of cargo while maintaining accurate documentation.

Job Responsibilities

Conduct thorough inspections to verify that all shipboard working equipment—including gears, hatches, cranes, and discharge systems—are fully operational and performing optimally before and throughout cargo handling procedures.

Ensure the prompt mobilization of stevedoring teams and dockworkers to facilitate the immediate initiation of cargo discharge operations as soon as a vessel berths.

Oversee and optimize daily cargo discharge rates at the berth or jetty while delivering precise, real-time operational updates to the Head of Shipping.

Work collaboratively with terminal operations teams at both GDNL and Leak facilities while fostering strong partnerships with internal Strategic Business Unit (SBS) logistics departments to enhance the efficiency of cargo evacuation processes.

Prepare and circulate meticulously verified daily Vessel Situation Reports (Streps), documenting shift performance metrics, tonnage throughput, and key operational achievements.

Promptly drafting and releasing formal Letters of Protest (LOP) on behalf of the company whenever operational challenges occur—such as vessel equipment malfunctions, terminal inefficiencies, or adverse weather conditions—to mitigate the risk of unwarranted demurrage charges.

Responsibilities include upholding corporate policies and standard shipping protocols while ensuring all onboard operations are conducted safely in strict adherence to maritime regulations.

Proven expertise in the specified competency areas is essential for this role. Candidates must demonstrate a strong command of the required skills, ensuring they meet the established proficiency benchmarks. Familiarity with industry standards and best practices is crucial, as is the ability to apply this knowledge effectively in practical settings. Additionally, the role demands a commitment to continuous learning and professional development to maintain and enhance competencies over time.

Proven expertise in vessel cargo-handling operations, stevedoring coordination, terminal workflow optimization, and onboard shipping procedures.

Proficiency in monitoring vessel discharge metrics and interpreting port agency documentation is required.

Exceptional proficiency in both verbal and written communication is essential. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a track record of clear and persuasive interactions with varied, high-stakes teams—such as ship captains, multinational crews, port authorities, and external partners—to ensure alignment and efficiency.

Equipped with strong analytical reasoning and the capacity to make prompt decisions, the ideal candidate will excel in high-pressure situations on deck.

Demonstrates a strong ability to identify operational inefficiencies, manage unpredictable labor disputes involving dockworkers, and file formal technical protests while maintaining composure under pressure.

High proficiency in digital tools, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), is essential for preparing well-organized and concise vessel situation reports and logs with clarity and precision.

Absolute integrity, a proactive mindset, and outstanding organizational abilities are essential. The role demands high resilience and peak physical fitness to manage comprehensive onboard operations autonomously, with minimal oversight required.

Proficiency in supervisory functions and operational management aboard ships is required.

Must demonstrate compliance with established corporate policies and standard operating procedures.

Proven ability to conduct both quantitative and qualitative analysis with precision and insight.

Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field from an accredited institution. Candidates with relevant certifications and at least three years of experience in software development, network administration, or cybersecurity will be preferred.

A minimum qualification of an HND in fields such as Maritime Transport & Business Studies, Shipping/Ports Operations & Management, Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a closely related discipline is required.
