Team Lead, Accounts Payable & Expense Management

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Team Lead, Accounts Payable & Expense Management to oversee our accounts payable, expense management, and payroll accounting functions. This role is critical in ensuring efficient processing of vendor payments, expense control, and compliance with financial policies and tax regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of financial controls, and experience working in a multinational fintech environment would be an advantage.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounts Payable Management:

Oversee and manage the end-to-end accounts payable process, ensuring timely and accurate processing of supplier invoices and payments.
Implement and enforce internal controls over vendor payments to prevent fraud and ensure compliance with company policies.
Review and approve payment runs, ensuring proper authorization and adequate supporting documentation.
Maintain and monitor vendor accounts, ensuring reconciliations are performed regularly and any discrepancies are resolved promptly.
Lead the automation and process improvement initiatives within the accounts payable function to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Collaborate with procurement and other departments to ensure smooth vendor onboarding and contract compliance.

Expense Management:

Establish and maintain robust expense policies to ensure Group-wide adherence to budgetary and financial guidelines.
Supervise employee expense reimbursements, ensuring they align with company policies and proper approvals are in place.
Monitor corporate card transactions, ensuring timely reconciliation and policy compliance.
Analyze trends in operating expenses and provide insights for cost optimization.
Implement best practices for travel and entertainment expense reporting.

Payroll Accounting:

Oversee the payroll accounting function, ensuring accurate recording of payroll expenses, tax deductions, and statutory remittances.
Collaborate with the HR and payroll teams to validate payroll reports, ensuring compliance with tax laws.
Ensure timely remittance of payroll-related statutory deductions, including PAYE, pension contributions, and other levies.
Reconcile payroll accounts, including salary advances, benefits, and payroll tax liabilities.
Assist in managing payroll audits and responding to regulatory queries as needed.

Financial Reporting & Compliance

Ensure accounts payable and payroll-related transactions are properly recorded in the general ledger and reconciled in line with IFRS and local regulatory requirements.
Prepare and submit periodic reports on accounts payable aging, expense trends, and payroll-related financial impacts.
Support the finance team in statutory audits, tax audits, and regulatory reporting, ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
Stay updated on relevant tax laws, including VAT, WHT, and payroll tax regulations across jurisdictions.

EDUCATION

General Education

A good first degree (in finance or a related field) from an accredited university is required.

Evidence of strong industry/sector participation and relevant professional certifications such as:

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN)
Association of Certified and Chartered Accountants (ACCA)

EXPERIENCE

General Experience

5+ years of relevant experience with at least 2 years in a leadership role within accounts payable, expense management, or payroll accounting.
Experience in a fintech, financial services, or multinational company is preferred.
Strong knowledge of IFRS, tax regulations, and compliance requirements
Proficiency in the use of ERP systems and expense management tools.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders.
