Job Purpose
The channel Head will be the channel’s top authority responsible for the day-to-day running of the channel.
He is the channel’s principal officer who oversees the administrative, technical, programme, and sales aspects of the channel.
He continually strives to maintain the work environment and financial viability of the channel.
He leads the team to ensure that the key objectives of the channel are met in terms of output, audience or revenue.
He also helps determine the channel’s objectives and it is then his job to provide leadership and motivation to channel’s staff to ensure they are met.
Description of Duties and Responsibilities
The Channel Head works as direct overseers at the channel.
The position is involved directly with increasing revenue and problem solving at the channel. Communication skills are generally needed to delegate duties to the channel staff, as well as working with outside organizations and agencies.
The channel Head may also need to evaluate projects and specific knowledge related to the content of programming.
The Channel Head ensures that the channel remains in compliance with regulations, and also creates the internal protocols for channel’s employees and analyzes literature to develop on-air content.
In addition, the Channel Head is responsible for recruiting and retaining employees, managing staff welfare and morale and establishing the channel’s culture. He is responsible for internal communications with staff, board of directors, as well as external communications, representing the channel and building relationships within the community.
It is also the duty of the Channel Head to ensure compliance with laws, regulations and industry codes governing television broadcasting. He also ensures that complaints are dealt with swiftly.
The responsibilities of a Channel Head may even include on-air and editorial duties.
In general the Channel Head will:
Possess overall responsibility of growing the channel’s profitability.
Oversee all the channel’s departments including news, sales, marketing, engineering, programming, production and community affairs.
Heavily involved with channel’s sales efforts.
Sets work ethic, tone and pace of the channel.
Predicts market trends and sets budgets and performance expectations.
Ensures the channel is in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Responsible for maintaining the channel’s reputation and market image.
Creates clear vision for the channel and the blueprints for success that every staff member is expected to follow.
Creates and maintains relationships with advertisers and potential advertisers.
Committed to involving the channel in community events and public affairs.
Person Specification
Must be a strong leader with the ability to manage all aspects of the channel.
Significant relevant experience in broadcasting sales management or related required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Sales, Marketing, Communications or related field preferred.
Prior experience as a Manager for a television channel preferred.
