About the Role
We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Senior Medical Research Scientist to oversee epidemiological/interventional studies. The Senior Medical Research Scientist will be responsible for the overall design, implementation, and oversight of clinical studies, ensuring scientific rigour, ethical compliance, and operational excellence. S/he will work closely with a multidisciplinary research team, national and international collaborators, and funding partners to achieve the study objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Study Design & Implementation:
Lead the design and execution of clinical studies across selected tertiary hospitals in Nigeria.
Develop study protocols, patient recruitment strategies, and data collection frameworks.
Oversee adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines and ethical research standards.
Clinical & Research Oversight:
Provide expert guidance on maternal health interventions and preeclampsia management.
Ensure proper monitoring of study participants, including blood pressure tracking, biochemical marker assessment and pregnancy outcomes.
Supervise pharmacological, nutritional, and lifestyle-based interventions in collaboration with clinical specialists.
Data Management & Analysis:
Work with biostatisticians and epidemiologists to ensure robust study design and statistical analysis.
Oversee data integrity, ensuring accurate documentation and timely analysis.
Lead cost-effectiveness evaluations of different intervention strategies.
Ethical & Regulatory Compliance:
Obtain ethical approvals from Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and ensure compliance with local and international research regulations.
Ensure informed consent procedures are properly implemented.
Publication & Knowledge Dissemination:
Publish study findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
Present research at international maternal health and epidemiology conferences.
Develop policy briefs and recommendations for public health programs
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements:
Must be a licensed physician with specialisation in Obstetrics & Gynecology or Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Master’s degree (required) or PhD (desirable) in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or Public Health.
Minimum of 7 years of experience conducting clinical studies in maternal health, pregnancy-related conditions, or public health research.
Proven expertise in randomised controlled trial (RCT) design, implementation, and management.
Strong background in biostatistics, epidemiology, and cost-effectiveness analysis.
Experience obtaining ethical approvals (IRB) and conducting research in compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Demonstrated track record of securing research funding and managing grants.
Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams involving clinicians, public health professionals, nutritionists, and statisticians.
Knowledge of maternal health policies and programs in Nigeria and globally.
Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with large-scale, multi-center studies in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Previous collaboration with WHO, UNFPA, NIH, or other global health organizations.
Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, Stata, or SPSS).
Experience working with community health programs and maternal health interventions in resource-limited settings.
Compensation & Benefits
Gross Salary: NGN 25,600,000 – NGN 30,720,000 per annum depending on level of experience
