Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant position is accountable for monitoring the progress of projects and programmes, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that billings are issued to customers and payments collected.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Create project/programme accounts in the accounting system
Maintain project/programme-related records, including contracts and change orders
Authorize access to project/programme accounts
Authorize the transfer of expenses into and out of project/programme-related accounts
Review account totals related to project/programme assets and expenses
Investigate project/programme variances and submit variance reports to line manager
Report on project/programme profitability to management
Report to management on any opportunities for additional billings
Report to management regarding the remaining funding available for ongoing or executed project/programmes
Create or approve all project/programme-related billings
Investigate all project/programme expenses
Close out project/programme accounts upon their completion
Create and submit government reports and tax returns related to project/programmes
Compile information for internal and external auditors, as required
Manage and communicate job cash flow
Advise project/programme team on accounting procedures and policies
Contribute to accounting team meetings with knowledge-sharing and process-improvement ideas
Assist with re-estimates to ensure revenue and cost is recorded
Ensure accuracy of Profit and Loss statements
Enter cash receipts and reconciliation of bank statements
Requirements:
Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/related courses. Masters degree in Management, Finance or Accounting will be an added advantage.
Minimum Experience: At least 5 – 8 years of experience in Project/programme Accounting, Finance.
Professional Membership: Associate Membership of ACCA, ICAN or other relevant professional association is required.
Skills & Competencies;
Previous experience as a Project/programme Accountant for a NGO is highly desirable
Sufficient accounting experience in a busy, tightly-managed business environment, including monthly reporting, budget preparation, financial modeling and cash flow reporting
Extensive experience in the use of diverse accounting software
Relevant experience or understanding of financial reporting standards
Strong Project/programme Management and administrative skills
Strong relationship building skills and ability to manage relationships with key clients or stakeholders across the organization
Ability to work under pressure and maximally utilize initiative
Possession of a high sense of honesty and integrity
Good command of MS office (Word, advance Excel, PowerPoint, accounting software).
