Role Description
The Board of Directors regards the Head of School as the educational, administrative and supervisory leader within the School.
She will be responsible for the organisation, discipline and general operation of the school as a whole.
She will report to the Board of Directors.
Her supervisory duties are varied and include all matters which will facilitate and promote the professional growth of teachers as well as all round educational development of pupils.
She is responsible for promotion of values and ethos that support the school’s vision and mission.
The Board of Directors looks forward to the numerical growth of pupil population at all times subject to the capacity of the facilities of the school.
The Head of School is expected to spearhead efforts to achieve this objectives.
Responsibilities
As the Board of Directors:
The Board of Directors has approved certain guidelines for the Head of School and has outlined specific duties and responsibilities. It also recommends certain practice in school administration and operation.
The Board of Directors encourages helpful suggestions and advice from the Head of School.
The Board of Directors will consult with the Head of School on school staff appointments and placements. The Head of School is the administrator under Board of Directors’ Policy responsible for staffing.
Specifically, the Head of School’s duties and responsibilities shall include the following in the context of Board of Directors Policy.
In Relation to Pupils:
The Head of School shall ensure that pupils are placed in the most appropriate educational environment subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.
The Head of School and staff shall be responsible for the supervision of classroom and play activities of the pupils throughout the school day. The Head of School owes all pupil duty of care and must follow the disciplinary procedure as approved by the Board of Directors.
The Head of School shall ensure that report format approved by the Board of Directors are used to report to parents.
The Head of School shall ensure that reports to parents on the progress of their children are timeously provided.
The Head of School shall ensure that at the end of the instructional year, a statement of placement is provided to the parents of each student.
In Relation to Staff:
The Head of School shall allocate and may make policies and regulations concerning the duties of all instructional and support personnel of the School, and shall be responsible for the organisation, supervision and general discipline in the school.
Although she has the authority to allocate duties and make policies and regulations for the school, the Head of School should discuss and determine the duties, policies and regulations in consultation with her management team and staff as a whole so that a spirit of mutual goodwill and co-operation will prevail in the school.
The Head of School shall convene management and staff meetings regularly to maintain a high level of communication.
As Educational Leader and Supervisor:
The Head of School shall provide leadership, direction and supervision in the school by Co-ordinating the development of the school blueprint and program plan, to ensure strategies included therein are appropriate and effective in the Newfield Schools context, and conducting periodic reviews to devise ways for improvement
Guiding and helping school management team and teachers through evaluation, supervision and other means consistent with Board of Directors Policy and good professional practice.
Encouraging professional growth for all staff members by co-ordinating the development of individual Professional Development Plans, as well as the identification and promotion of in-service programs beneficial to the staff as a whole.
Act as a mentor to the school management team and all staff through sharing of information and discussion.
Fostering co-operative and harmonious staff relations, and
Developing good relations between the school and the community.
As Administrative Head of the School:
The Head of School is responsible for carrying out all duties that befit him/her through any practice, policy or regulation of the Board of Directors.
The Head of School shall ensure appropriate and prompt compliance with Government rules and regulations.
The Head of School shall ensure that the School’s financial management system runs according to laid down procedure as approved by the Board of Directors and monitor the school’s revenue.
The Head of School is responsible for preparing estimates of the needs of the School which are to be reflected in the development of the annual school budget with respect to: Instructional equipment
Instructional aids
Furnishings
Supplies
Prospective staff requirements for the next school year.
Reserves
The Board of Directors may set schedules or tables for the above.
The Head of School is responsible for the accurate completion and prompt forwarding of all forms or reports as may be required by the Board of Directors.
The Head of School is required to ensure the prompt transmission of official bulletins and information to staff members.
All staff in the school is under the general direction of the Head of School. The Head of School is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of the staff employed by the school in accordance with the Board of Directors’ Performance Evaluation Policy.
The Head of School is responsible for the general direction of school bus with respect to the pupils transported on school bus services, field trips and excursions.
The Head of School has direct responsibility to the Board of Directors for all school property under her jurisdiction.
To Parents:
The Head of School shall ensure that consistent lines of communication with parents are maintained in order that issues might readily be resolved and that a spirit of mutual goodwill and cooperation might prevail.
The Head of School shall make provisions for the establishment of the school Parents Teacher Association in accordance with the Board of Directors Policy.
The Head of School shall ensure that where possible, the parents are involved in the decision making process affecting their children.
The Head of School shall ensure that parent/teacher interviews are arranged as a part of the means of reporting to parents on students’ progress.
The Head of School shall publish regular newsletters to parents in order to keep parents well informed of students’ activities.
The Head of School may be required to teach classes or oversee certain subjects as needed
The Head of School shall carry out such other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Requirements
Candidates should possess relevant qualifications
3 – 5 years work experience.
