Head of Country Programmes

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to help reduce poverty and support people in understanding their rights. To achieve this, it partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues; and
Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

The work of BBC Media Action focuses on three thematic areas:

Health
Governance and rights; and
Humanitarian and emergency preparedness

At present, BBC Media Action in Nigeria has several large multi-year projects addressing governance and health issues using both drama and factual outputs. We will be looking to develop new projects in 2015-16 and are seeking to recruit a Head of Country Programmes to work in Abuja, Nigeria on a two year attachment/fixed term contract.

Role Responsibility
Reporting to the Country Director, Nigeria, your overall responsibility will be for the overall management and delivery of the projects involving the delivery of a range of diverse media outputs.  The focus of the role is on project management, training, engagement with media partners and business development activities.  The post holder will lead and develop a team, as well as ensure the agreed targets and objectives of country projects are met while ensuring the quality and cohesion of project outputs.  You will also be responsible for overseeing financial management of projects and reporting on editorial and operational progress to the Country Director and liaising with the relevant teams in the London headquarters and donors.  Business development is a key part of this role.  Working with the team, you will help identify opportunities for growth, pursue and respond to funding opportunities.

The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in senior project management, ideally within a developing country context.  You will be able to prove your ability to manage large scale, complex projects.  Previous experience of successfully creating development projects in excess of £500,000, including working with donors to identify needs and writing successful proposals is essential.  You will have strong financial management skills and experience of working in international development.  Excellent leadership skills are fundamental for this role.
