Summary
An Accountant in a hotel is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the hotel’s financial operations, including recording transactions, reconciling accounts, generating financial reports, analyzing financial data, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and providing strategic financial insights to management, all while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail within the unique complexities of the hospitality industry; often leading a team of junior accountants.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting:
Prepare and analyze comprehensive financial statements including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
Monitor key financial metrics and identify trends to inform decision-making.
Produce timely and accurate financial reports for management and stakeholders.
General Ledger Management:
Oversee the accuracy of the general ledger by reviewing and posting journal entries.
Perform account reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts.
Ensure proper coding and classification of transactions.
Revenue and Receivables Management:
Monitor room revenue, food and beverage sales, and other income streams.
Analyze guest accounts receivable and follow up on outstanding balances.
Manage credit card processing and reconciliation.
Cost Control and Expense Management:
Analyze and monitor departmental expenses to identify cost-saving opportunities.
Review and approve invoices and purchase orders.
Work with department heads to manage budgets and control cost
Compliance and Auditing:
Ensure adherence to all applicable accounting standards and regulations.
Coordinate with internal and external auditors for financial statement audits.
Maintain proper documentation and records for compliance purposes.
Team Leadership:
Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff.
Assign tasks and delegate responsibilities to team members.
Develop and implement training programs for accounting staff.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or relevant professional accounting certification preferred
Minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting, with significant experience in the hospitality industry
Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, SAP)
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with various departments
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
