"Onto State University of Medical Sciences: Africa's 3rd specialized, premier Nigerian medical university."
Onto State University of Medical Sciences is a state-owned institution established in 2015 under the Onto State Government. Recognized as Africa’s third specialized medical university and Nigeria’s first accredited medical university by the National Universities Commission, it stands as a beacon of excellence in academic research, innovation, and development. The university was founded to revitalize the declining standards of medical education in Nigeria.
Professor Friday Okonofua, a distinguished Nigerian gynecologist and the university’s inaugural substantive Vice Chancellor, also founded the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre—a Benin City-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing female reproductive health research.
