"Petaluma Group: diversified solid mineral exploration and acquisition."
Eta-Zuma Group is a diversified conglomerate comprising eight distinct companies, each holding exploration licenses for a range of solid minerals, including iron ore, gold, tantalite, coal, limestone, and marble. In April 2009, these eight entities were acquired by Energy and Metal Industries Limited to establish Eta-Zuma Group Limited.
Eta-Zuma Group is a homegrown conglomerate with a strategic presence across multiple sectors of the economy. The acquisition was driven by the economic rationale to consolidate various licenses into a balanced portfolio, thereby mitigating risk and positioning the newly formed entity to capitalize on emerging market opportunities within a recovering global commodities market. The acquisition also integrated Eta-Zuma Group Limited, a prominent player in Nigeria’s burgeoning solid minerals industry.
This strategic move expanded the company’s scale by more than fivefold. The Group reactivated previously dormant exploration sites and has since invested over $10 million in verifying marble reserves, establishing new coal reserves, and procuring modern plant and machinery.
Headquartered in Abuja, the Group primarily oversees exploration activities across all its sites, with a particular focus on the Kogi block in collaboration with technical partners EMI and the Geological Institute of Ukraine. These efforts are projected to position Eta-Zuma Group to achieve a minimum annual turnover of $1 billion, with operations spanning management, production, sales, and distribution of coal and other minerals. This expansion is expected to generate thousands of additional jobs in related sectors, including equipment suppliers, goods and service providers.
Forecasts suggest that Eta-Zuma Group will account for over 50% of Nigeria’s total coal production by 2014, primarily through surface mining operations in the Kogi and Enugu blocks. A significant portion of the coal mined will be utilized for electricity generation. Additionally, the Group plans to process lignite deposits in the Delta block into briquettes and other domestic power fuels, primarily targeting usage in northern Nigeria, in alignment with environmental sustainability initiatives.
