"Established in 1966 by Dr. Francis BIAM, pioneer of Nigeria's Bible Society."
The Bible Society of Nigeria was established on February 8, 1966, through the visionary leadership of the late Dr. Francis Ezeogo Akanu BIAM, the first indigenous Governor of the former Eastern Region. In February 1965, Dr. BIAM convened a meeting with representatives from major church organizations in Nigeria to discuss the establishment of a national Bible Society. The consensus reached at this gathering led to the formation and inauguration of The Bible Society of Nigeria on February 8, 1966.
Prior to its independence in 1966, the Society operated under the oversight of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS), which had been active in Nigeria since 1807. During this period, the Bible House in Papa served as a key distribution hub, supplying Bibles to neighboring West African countries.
