The company operates a vast Global Terminal Network, comprising 63 active port and terminal facilities across 39 countries on five continents, with an additional seven new port projects under development. Additionally, APM Terminals manages over 160 inland services operations spanning 48 countries, offering container transportation, management, maintenance, and repair services.
Recognized for its industry leadership, APM Terminals received the prestigious “International Terminal Operator of the Year” award at the Containerization International Awards in October 2013, marking its second consecutive year of recognition. The company also secured the “Port Operator Award” at the Lloyd’s List Asia Awards 2013, following its earlier win for “Port Operator of the Year” at the Lloyd’s List Global Awards in 2012.
In 2013, the APM Terminals Global Terminal Network processed 36.3 million TEUs (equity-weighted), reflecting a 3% increase in container throughput compared to 2012. The company reported a profit of USD $770 million on revenue of USD $4.33 billion, achieving a 13.5% return on invested capital (ROIC). Operational cash flow for the year reached USD $923 million, up from USD $910 million in 2012.
Notable developments in 2013 included the signing of a partnership agreement with Turkey-based Petrie to develop and operate APM Terminals Izmir, a new deep-water port facility near Izmir on the western Anatolian coast. Once operational, this terminal will serve as one of Turkey’s largest container and general cargo hubs, capable of handling vessels exceeding 10,000 TEU capacity, with an expected opening by mid-2015.
APM Terminals, in collaboration with consortium partners Boldore Africa Logistics and Bouygues Construction, secured the concession for a second container terminal at the Port of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast. This Public-Private Partnership project will support vessels up to 8,000 TEU capacity, significantly enhancing the port’s capacity as a Key West African logistics hub.
Furthermore, Global Ports Investments PLC—where APM Terminals holds a co-controlling 30.75% stake—completed the acquisition of NCC Group Limited, Russia’s second-largest terminal operator. Additionally, Brazil Terminal Ontario, in which APM Terminals holds a 50% interest, was officially inaugurated at the Port of Santos, the busiest container port in South America.
