Senior Laboratory Technologist

Job Description

Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the Centre’s laboratory operations and performance
Ensure the testing systems developed and used for each of the tests and experiments performed in the laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance
Identify failures in policy, testing, quality, etc. throughout the laboratory as they occur, and institute methods improving upon these deficiencies
Establish and maintain communication with both Centre’s personal and external research collaborators regarding current project developments
Prepare and implement department budgets for personnel, operating expenses and capital equipment in co-operation with the Centre Leader and Co-Centre Leader
Provide an approved procedure manual (Standard operating procedure documents) and serve as a resource to all personnel and students who may require the use of facilities in the laboratory.
Ensure that the environmental conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees and students are protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards
Establish operations standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, and complete on-time delivery
Oversee the development of the Centre’s plans and programs in evaluation of long- range planning and regulatory action on operational performance
Promote processes for collaboration, cooperation, sharing of information and mutual team work
Monitor and analyses current laboratory trends, and recommend policy or procedural changes or adjustments as appropriate
Plan and administer performance improvement activities within the Centre as necessary
Coordinate the planning of safety and hazard programs in case of an emergency
To undertake research projects as may be assigned by the Centre from time to time
Carry out other assigned duties

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A relevant Master of Science (MSc) degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical/Clinical Biochemistry, Physiology or related discipline. A PhD degree in the above or related disciplines will be an advantage.
Substantial relevant experience in research and/or knowledge of clinical laboratory services
Ability to teach research students and visiting researchers to the laboratory.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
Ability to maintain confidentiality of all information on medical and laboratory investigations
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Remuneration This is negotiable and shall be in accordance with emoluments approved for similar level in the Nigerian University system.
