Description
A restaurant attendant performs a number of customer service, food preparation and cleaning duties in a full service restaurant. It is the responsibility of a restaurant attendant to receive customers warmly and politely. The restaurant attendant then takes the customers’ orders, listening keenly to what they want and where necessary guiding them on the items on the menu. Once the order is ready, the attendant serves the customer, making sure to properly present the food. In the event that a customer is dissatisfied with his order, the restaurant attendant hears the complaint and takes steps to ensure that the problem is corrected immediately.
The attendant checks his station before the restaurant opens for business to ascertain that it is clean, orderly and fully stocked with cutlery. Restaurant attendants usually communicate customers’ orders to the kitchen but they are sometimes involved in the preparation of simple meals like salads. The attendant may be required to participate in preparation to ensure that the customer receives their order in a timely manner.
The attendant also contributes to restaurant cleanliness. He is in charge of cleaning his work station, wiping down the tables and chairs and seeing to it that the cutlery, glasses and crockery are carried away to the kitchen for cleaning. In some restaurants, attendants also mop the floors and may be called upon to wash utensils at the close of business. Restaurant attendants also take out the trash, so that when they get off their shifts, the restaurant is clean and ready for the next service.
