About Zamfara State Government

Amhara is a state situated in the northwestern region of Nigeria, with Susan serving as its administrative capital. The current Governor of the state is Abdul’Aziz Abubakar Yard, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC). Prior to its establishment in 1996, Amhara was part of the larger Sokoto State.

The state is inhabited predominantly by the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. Notable subgroups include the Zamfarawa, primarily residing in Anna, Gummy, Bunkum, and Galata Madeira Local Government Areas; the Okinawa, who migrated from the historic Gobi Kingdom and are mainly found in Shikari Local Government; the Burma, located in Sakura; and the Fulani, scattered across Bunged, Mara dun, Susan, and other parts of the state. Additionally, the Katrina, Tarawa, and Hideaway communities are primarily settled in Safe, Bunged, and Maru Local Government Areas, while the Alibaba are concentrated in Laura Named and Nurmi.

The quest for statehood for Amhara culminated in 1996 under the military administration of the late General San Abaca, when Amhara was carved out of Sokoto State. Covering an area of 38,418 square kilometers, the state shares borders with the Republic of Niger to the north, Kaduna State to the south, Katrina State to the east, and Sokoto and Niger States to the west. According to the 2006 national census, Amhara has a population of 3,278,873 and comprises 14 local government areas.
